What is IT asset disposition (ITAD)?
UPDATED JULY 2026
IT asset disposition (ITAD), also called asset disposition, is the secure end-of-life process for retired IT hardware: collecting it, destroying the data, reselling what still has value, and recycling the rest under a documented chain of custody. CTS delivers IT asset disposition services as an R2v3-certified operator that runs all of it in-house, issues a certificate of destruction per serial number, and returns recovered value to you — so disposition becomes a return, not just a cost.
New to the space? See the ITAD process explained, ITAM vs ITAD, or how to choose an ITAD company.
Six steps. Serial number tracked through every one.
Scheduled. Dedicated truck, sealed and chain-of-custody-tracked.
Inventoried. Serial-matched to your asset register.
NIST 800-88 wipe, or shred to under 2mm. Verified.
Resold through certified channels; residual shared back.
What can't be resold goes to R2v3 recycling.
Certificate of destruction per serial, plus ESG report.
What ITAD has to deliver in regulated industries.
The disposition process is the same; the evidence each industry demands is not. What CTS delivers per vertical:
| INDUSTRY | WHAT ITAD MUST DELIVER |
|---|---|
| Healthcare | HIPAA chain of custody; PHI on every device destroyed and certified per serial for OCR audits. |
| Financial services | GLBA / SEC / FINRA-grade documented destruction with an examiner-ready audit trail. |
| Retail | PCI-DSS handling for payment terminals; multi-site rollups across hundreds of locations. |
| Tech & SaaS | R2v3 + NIST 800-88 evidence for customer vendor-security questionnaires. |
| Government / regulated | NIST 800-88 / NSA particle-size destruction with the strictest chain-of-custody controls. |
Every device is tracked by serial under one chain of custody, sanitized to NIST 800-88, by an R2v3-certified operator.
Decommissioned by serial, not by the pallet.
Every asset is scanned and recorded the moment it's pulled — from a rack in your data center to a laptop on a desk. Nothing moves without a serial-level record, so the audit trail is unbroken from pickup to certified disposition. We run the floor; we don't subcontract the custody.
Wipe it. Shred it. Both.
Pick the security level your data calls for, from offsite logical wipe to onsite shredding under 2mm.
Logical wipe
NIST 800-88, DoD 5220.22-M, or IEEE 2883. Each wipe creates a certificate tied to the serial number.
Physical destruction
Shredded to under 2mm, offsite at our facility or onsite at yours when chain of custody can't leave your sight (armed transport on request).
