DEFINITION

What is hard drive destruction?

UPDATED SEPTEMBER 2026

Hard drive destruction permanently destroys a drive so its data can never be recovered. There are three primary methods — hard drive shredding (cutting the drive to particles, under 2mm for the highest assurance), degaussing (a magnetic field that erases HDDs and tape), and a verified wipe to NIST 800-88 (which lets a healthy drive be resold). CTS runs certified onsite data destruction and offsite facility shredding services, issuing a certificate of destruction for every serial number. When the audit question is "where did that drive go?", the answer is a serial-matched certificate.

THE THREE METHODS

Shred, degauss, or wipe — and when to use each.

METHOD HOW IT WORKS MEDIA REUSABLE? ASSURANCE
Physical shredding Drives are fed through industrial shears and cut to small particles (to under 2mm for the highest assurance). HDD, SSD, tape, mobile, optical No — media is destroyed Highest
Degaussing A powerful magnetic field scrambles the magnetic domains that store data, leaving the platter unreadable. HDD and magnetic tape only No — drive is rendered inoperable High (magnetic media only)
Logical wipe (overwrite) Every sector is overwritten and verified to a recognized standard (NIST 800-88), then the drive is checked clean. HDD, SSD (block erase / crypto erase) Yes — drive survives for resale/redeploy High (verified)

The right method depends on the media and the data. Failed or highly sensitive drives are shredded. Healthy drives you want to recover value from are verify-wiped and resold. Magnetic drives can also be degaussed. Read the deeper explainers on SSD vs HDD destruction and how degaussing works.

CERTIFIED ONSITE OPERATIONS

Onsite data destruction: mobile shredding trucks at your dock.

When strict corporate security mandates or federal compliance standards require that data-bearing drives never leave your physical facility intact, CTS deploys specialized mobile data destruction trucks directly to your dock. Our self-powered units handle high-volume rotary shear shredding down to NSA-compliant particles right on your premises.

Zero Transit Risk

Storage media is destroyed before any vehicle enters public roadways. Custody transfer occurs under your team's direct physical supervision, completely eliminating lost-in-transit liability.

CCTV Video-Monitored Destruction

Our mobile trucks feature high-definition closed-circuit camera systems recording both serial barcode scanning and the shred hopper intake, producing verifiable visual proof for compliance records.

Immediate On-Dock Certificate Issuance

Before our truck pulls away from your facility, our certified technicians issue a preliminary signed Certificate of Destruction reconciling every scanned serial number.

CHAIN OF CUSTODY

Tracked from your dock to under 2mm.

A drive is a liability the moment it leaves your control without a record. We seal, scan, and track every drive from pickup to destruction, so there's never a window where a drive exists but isn't accounted for. Offsite or onsite, the chain of custody is unbroken and the certificate is serial-matched.

ONSITE OR OFFSITE

Where the destruction happens is your call.

ONSITE (SHRED TRUCK) OFFSITE (OUR FACILITY)
Where it happens A shred truck comes to your dock; destruction completes on your property. Drives are sealed and transported to our secured facility.
Who witnesses Your team can watch every drive go in. Serialized chain-of-custody record stands in for eyes-on.
Chain of custody Never leaves your sight. Tamper-evident seals + serial scans at every handoff.
Best for Highest-security data, regulated audits, "must not leave the building" policies. Volume jobs, multi-site pickups, cost efficiency.
Certificate Issued before we leave. Issued on completion, per serial number.
THE PROCESS

Six steps, every drive tracked by serial.

  1. 01 · INVENTORY & SEAL

Drives are counted and scanned by serial number at pickup; the chain of custody opens the moment they are collected.

  2. 02 · SECURE TRANSPORT

Sealed, tamper-evident transport from your dock — dedicated vehicle, with armed transport available for the highest-security loads.

  3. 03 · DESTROY

Shred to under 2mm, degauss, or verify-wipe to NIST 800-88, matched to the media type and your policy.

  4. 04 · VERIFY

Every wipe is verified clean; every shredded load is confirmed against the serial manifest.

  5. 05 · CERTIFY

A certificate of destruction is issued per serial number for your audit trail.

  6. 06 · RECYCLE

Destroyed media is recycled to R2v3 standards with downstream tracking — nothing landfilled.

STANDARDS

The standards behind the certificate.

NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1

The U.S. media-sanitization guideline. Defines Clear, Purge, and Destroy, and maps the right level to each media type.

NSA/CSS EPL

The NSA evaluated-products list sets the particle-size bar for high-security destruction (e.g. ≤2mm for solid-state media).

R2v3

SERI's Responsible Recycling standard: documented chain of custody, downstream tracking, and data sanitization to NIST 800-88.

DoD 5220.22-M

A legacy multi-pass overwrite spec still named in many contracts for magnetic media.

IEEE 2883-2022

A modern sanitization standard written for SSDs and flash, where multi-pass overwrites no longer apply cleanly.

COMPLIANCE

What regulators expect.

HIPAA

PHI on retired media must be rendered unrecoverable; a certificate per serial documents it for an OCR audit.

GLBA / FACTA

Financial and consumer-report data require documented, verifiable disposal.

PCI-DSS

Anything that touched cardholder data must be destroyed to a defensible standard.

Sarbanes-Oxley

Records-retention and destruction must be auditable end to end.

FAQ

Hard drive destruction questions we get a lot.

01

What is hard drive destruction?

Hard drive destruction permanently destroys a drive so its data can never be recovered — by shredding it (to under 2mm for the highest assurance), degaussing magnetic media, or verify-wiping it to NIST 800-88. CTS does it onsite or offsite and issues a certificate of destruction for every serial number.
02

What is onsite data destruction and how does a mobile shredding truck work?

Onsite data destruction is a certified service where an industrial mobile shredding truck comes directly to your building or data center dock. Hard drives, SSDs, and magnetic tapes are scanned by serial number and fed into heavy-duty mechanical shredders on your premises while your personnel witness the destruction. CTS provides an immediate Certificate of Destruction before departing.
03

Is onsite data destruction required for compliance?

Many strict regulatory frameworks (including CJIS for law enforcement, DoD defense contractors, and sensitive HIPAA or PCI-DSS policies) require that data never leave organizational custody intact. Onsite mobile destruction satisfies these requirements by terminating the chain of custody on your property.
04

What is the most secure way to destroy a hard drive?

Physical shredding to a small particle size is the highest-assurance method because it leaves no readable media behind. For solid-state drives, the NSA requires shredding to 2mm or smaller. For healthy drives you intend to resell, a verified NIST 800-88 purge is secure and preserves the asset.
05

Is onsite or offsite hard drive destruction better?

Both meet the same standards and both produce a certificate per serial. Onsite means a shred truck comes to you and your team can watch; offsite means drives are sealed and chain-of-custody-tracked to our facility. Choose onsite when chain of custody must never leave your sight; choose offsite for volume and cost efficiency.
06

Can you destroy SSDs as well as hard drives?

Yes. SSDs store data in flash, not on magnetic platters, so degaussing does NOT work on them. We crypto-erase or block-erase healthy SSDs, or shred them to under 2mm — the particle size flash destruction requires.
07

Does degaussing work on SSDs?

No. Degaussing only erases magnetic media (HDDs and tape). SSDs and other flash storage are unaffected by magnetic fields and must be wiped (crypto/block erase) or physically shredded instead.
08

What particle size do you shred to?

To under 2mm for the highest assurance, which meets the NSA/CSS bar for solid-state media. Standard HDD shredding uses larger particles; we match the size to the media type and your security requirement.
09

Do you provide a certificate of destruction?

Yes — one certificate per serial number, so your audit trail maps to individual drives rather than a single bulk statement. See our certificate of destruction page for what appears on it.
10

What standards does your hard drive destruction meet?

NIST 800-88 sanitization, NSA/CSS particle-size requirements for high-security loads, R2v3 downstream tracking, and DoD 5220.22-M or IEEE 2883 where specified — with a certificate of destruction per serial number.
11

Is hard drive shredding the same as hard drive destruction?

Shredding is one method of destruction (physically cutting the drive to particles). The others are degaussing (for magnetic media) and verified wiping. All three are forms of hard drive destruction; all produce a certificate per serial number.
12

How do you handle a large volume of drives?

For high-volume or multi-site jobs we schedule sealed pickups, scan every drive by serial, and destroy offsite at capacity — or bring a shred truck onsite if your policy requires eyes-on destruction. Either way the manifest reconciles to the certificate.
13

Can I recover value instead of destroying drives?

Often, yes. Healthy drives can be verify-wiped to NIST 800-88 and resold rather than shredded, recovering residual value. We decide per drive: resell what is safe and valuable, destroy what is failed or too sensitive. See IT asset recovery.
14

How much does hard drive shredding cost?

Hard drive shredding is priced as a managed service scoped to volume, media type, and whether you need onsite (shred truck) or offsite destruction. On fleets that still hold resale value, buyback on the reusable assets can offset the shredding cost. We quote the service and the buyback transparently and show you the net.
15

Do you offer hard drive destruction near me?

We provide national coverage with onsite (shred-truck) and offsite options for hard drive shredding. Tell us your locations and volume and we will scope a pickup or an onsite visit.
